Apple Crumble with Walnuts

I have made apple crumble before, but only the gluten-free version. Not a huge difference, of course, but I secretly thought this one might be even more delicious. It’s also easy to make gluten-free, but I’ll get to that later. This easy apple crumble recipe is going to be a favorite in no time!

As far as ingredients go, this is really quite simple. There are only three ingredients under the crumble layer: apples, walnuts, and brown sugar. The sugar is optional, of course, because the whole thing is quite sweet, but combined with ice cream or yogurt, for example, it’s really quite delicious!

Bake in the oven

To make this apple crumble you start by chopping the apples in cubes. The apple mixture is then placed in a large bowl and mixed with the brown sugar and the nuts. If you want to prevent the apples from browning you can sprinkle some lemon juice over the top. That also gives it a fresh note so perfect to add. If you don’t want to use sugar you can use honey or maple syrup instead. In terms of quantity I would use a couple of tablespoons. Not too much. Which apples you want to use is up to you. I’ve used pink lady apples here. I find they do well in almost all desserts.

Ingredients for apple crumble

Heat the oven to 180˚C or 350 degrees F. Now is the time to make the crumbly topping. I used a simple combination of sugar, butter andall purpose flour. Make sure you use cold butter as that’s easier to work with. You can however change the flour mixture into a nutty crumble by swapping it with almond flour. That way it is also gluten free. Whatever mix you use you want to have small clumbs. It does not have to be a smooth mix. Place your apple mix into a baking dish or pie dish and use your fingers to combine the ingredients for the crumb topping. Sprinkle that on top of the apples in a somewhat even layer.

Once the oven temperature is where it needs to be, bake in the oven for about 20-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown. I love eating this with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream or with fresh yogurt. I think it’s best at room temperature but cold is also an option. I just think the flavor are the best if slightly warm.

Breakfast or dinner

Now this is obviously a dessert recipe but it could very well substitute for breakfast if you have a sweet tooth. There is fruit in there so that’s good right. Haha… No this is not a good way to start your day but for a treat breakfast it’s definitely an option. It’s the time of year that some special breakfast is allowed right? I also love adding a bit of cinnamon to the mix as anything get’s better with cinnamon. A bit of lemon zest is also a good addition.

Variations

The good thing about this recipe is that it is easy to vary to. It’s delicious with juicy apples but can also be made with pears. In fall it’s apples and pears for me but in summer I like to make this with cherries, apricots or peaches. You can also vary with the topping ingredients if you want. Adding some raisins or cranberries to the apple crumble is also a delicious way to serve this.

Of course you could also make a rhubarb crumble or this chia pudding with apple crumble!
