Air Fryer Chicken Livers

I recently posted this delicious chicken liver recipe with lemon and garlic and I felt inspired to do some more chicken liver recipes. Chicken livers are very healthy and if you’re a chicken liver lover, you’ll want to try these air-fried chicken livers too.

What do you need to make the chicken livers?

Obviously, since this recipe is made in the air fryer, that is what you will need, although I will also give you the instructions for pan fried chicken livers a little further down. Other than that, this is a pretty simple air fryer recipe and perfect for making a quick snack.

  • chicken livers
  • all purpose flour
  • some olive oil
  • red onion
  • butter
  • Golden syrup (if you can’t find it, here’s a recipe to make your own)
  • A few slices of toast
  • Parsley for serving

How to make the air fryer chicken livers

The first thing you do to prepare this recipe is clean the chicken livers. I like to do this under cold running water and sometimes I take out the middle tough little string that may be in your chicken livers as well. I pat them dry with paper towels and dust them with a little flour. It’s actually a good idea to mix the flour with black pepper and salt and use that flour mixture to sprinkle on your chicken livers. Shake off any excess flour. You can also mix the flour with some onion powder or cayenne pepper.

Sprinkle the chicken livers with a little olive oil and place them in a single layer in the fryer basket. Now, depending on your fryer, you may or may not want to preheat it. Mine doesn’t need preheating, although I still use it sometimes. It is easier to keep track of the cooking time if you know exactly how hot it is.

Depending on the size of your chicken livers, you will need about 6-8 minutes to get them golden brown and crispy. While the livers are frying, slice the onion and place in a skillet over medium heat to soften and brown. Toast the bread, spread with a good layer of butter and golden syrup, and cover with the chicken livers. Sprinkle with chopped parsley to serve.

Tips for the best air fryer chicken livers

In order for the chicken livers to get crispy and brown, you want them to be dry and then rubbed with some olive oil. It’s handy to have an olive oil spray to prevent excess oil. I simply use an empty small spray bottle and fill it with olive oil. I find this is the best way to get an even coat. It’s also a great way to spray your baking pans.

This is obviously not a main course, but it makes a great lunch. You can also skip the toast and serve it as part of a meal. I love it on toast and that’s how I use this recipe all the time. It could also serve as a pretty tasty appetizer. For fans of chicken livers, I’m sure this will be a winner.

Additions and variations

If you’re not a fan of organ meats, you could probably make this with chicken breasts. Cut them into smaller pieces, of course. But I would try these Asian chicken nuggets instead. If you don’t like to serve this with golden syrup, you can use a hot sauce or ranch dressing instead. I also like to serve them with a chipotle based mayonaise. Super simple and so tasty.

You could also increase the crunchiness of this recipe by adding some panko (Japanese bread crumbs) to give it a little crunch on the outside. You can also add some caramelized onions to the toast for a delicious topping.

Preparing in the pan

If you don’t have an air fryer, you can easily make this in a regular frying pan. The biggest difference is the amount of oil you use, but otherwise it’s a pretty similar recipe. Except for the fact that the chicken livers will not be as crispy as they would be in the fryer. If you want a fried texture to the livers, you could use hot oil instead or shallow fry them in oil to get a crispy outer layer.
