Avocado Chocolate Mousse with Dates

If you love chocolate mousse but are ready to try something else, this chocolate avocado recipe is super easy to make, vegan and very delicious. It uses dates and avocado, skipping the banana and is still hard to resist!

Chocolate mousse with avocado may sound a little unusual, but don’t let that fool you. Avocado gives this mousse a rich and silky-smooth texture without using cream, eggs, or banana. The dates add natural sweetness and help bind everything together, resulting in a surprisingly deep chocolate flavor with just a handful of ingredients. Perfect if you want to try a vegan chocolate mousse for a change!

Recipe Ingredients

You only need a few ingredients to make this chocolate avocado mousse. Because there’s no banana, the texture may be slightly less smooth than a standard chocolate mousse, but I didn’t mind at all. Adding a banana is always an option if you prefer. This recipe is quite flexible.

  • Dates – make sure to soak them first for a smoother texture. Medjool dates work best.
  • Avocado – make sure they are ripe for the creamiest result.
  • Cocoa powder – I used raw cacao powder, but any cocoa powder works.
  • Almond milk – you can swap this for coconut milk (for a coconut version) or any other plant-based milk you like.

How To Make Avocado Chocolate Mousse

For best results, soak the dates first in warm plant-based milk. This helps soften them and makes blending much easier.

Best tools to use:

  1. High-speed blender – gives the smoothest result.
  2. Food processor – also works well, but will be slightly less smooth.
  3. Immersion blender – also a good option, but soak the dates very well.

Variation Ideas

You can easily customize this recipe:

  • Spicy: pinch of cayenne or chili powder for a Mexican twist
  • Extra creamy: splash of coconut milk or oat cream
  • More chocolate flavor: 1-2 tbsp extra cocoa or melted dark chocolate

No – as long as you use enough cocoa powder, you’ll taste mostly chocolate.

Yes you can use other sweeteners of your choice. Use maple syrup if you want to keep this a vegan chocolate mousse or honey, if you don’t care. Coconut blossom sugar is also a good option and of course if you want you can also add a ripe banana.

Absolutely. You can make this 24 hours in advance. Keep covered in the fridge until ready to use.

I have not tried freezing this recipe and I am a little hesitant if this will work or not. If you have tried it let me know how it turned out!

Any milk will work. If you want it creamier you can add coconut milk (but that will be an overpowering coconut flavor) or any other plant-based milk or even regular milk.

Ingredients

  • 150 grams pitted dates
  • 150 ml almond milk
  • 30 grams cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 ripe avocados
  • To serve: fresh mint & raspberries

Equipment

Instructions

  1. Place the dates in a food processor or high-speed blender. Warm the almond milk in a small saucepan (no need to boil), pour it over the dates, and let soak for at least 10 minutes to soften them.
  2. Blend the date mixture until mostly smooth. Add the avocado, cocoa, and vanilla, and blend again until completely creamy.
  3. Serve in a large bowl or individual cups and garnish with fresh raspberries and mint.
