Pumpkin Spice Latte (Halloween Version)

A delicious homemade pumpkin spice latte made with real pumpkin puree, warm spices, strong coffee, and topped with whipped cream. The perfect cozy fall drink!

Halloween pumpkin spice latte. Ok, there is nothing really scary about a pumpkin spice latte but serve it a skull and you’re guaranteed a delicious and somewhat scary beverage. I thought it was pretty fun and combined with a bit of smoke (I have a smoke gun for that!) this is a delicious drink for fall!

Tip from Simone

I served this pumpkin spice latte with chocolate marshmallows. They melt a bit in the hot drink and I think it looks extra cool. But because of the size I used it also made it a bit hard to eat/drink. You can also swap the bigger marshmallows for smaller ones. That would be better for consumption!

Recipe Ingredients

For making this Halloween version of a pumpkin spice latte you will need the following ingredients:

  • pumpkin puree – essential for making a pumpkin latte of course. You can make your own with this recipe for pumpkin puree, but it is easier to buy it in a can!
  • heavy cream – to serve on top of the latte
  • sugar – for in the cream
  • milk
  • vanilla extract
  • strong coffee – you can make the coffee as strong as you like really. I like mine to be strong to counter balance the sweetness but it’s totally optional
  • marshmallows – for sprinkling on top
  • gingerbread spice or cinnamon

How To Make Pumpkin Spice Latte

Making the drink is pretty easy but you start with adding the milk, pumpkin puree, sugar and the spices into a small sauce pan. Heat it until it is close to boiling. Whisk it until all flavors and ingredients are combined.

Whip the heavy cream to soft peaks with the sugar.

Divide your pumpkin spice latte over 4 glasses. You can pick scary looking glasses as I did but of course a regular glass works just as well. Pour in the hot coffee, add your pumpkin mixture and finish with whipped cream and marshmallows. Serve right away!

FAQ Pumpkin Spice Latte

Not always. Mine certainly does and I think it does make the flavor much better. But you could also make it with just pumpkin spice and without the actual pumpkin.

Whole milk makes a creamy latte, but oat milk is an excellent dairy-free alternative. Of course in that case you would also have to replace the heavy cream with a dairy-free version.

I didn’t use a milk frother but just whisked the pumpkin mix in a small pan. That works too. Instead of milk foam you have the heavy cream in this recipe.

Absolutely. Combine the pumpkin mixture with coffee and cold milk, then pour over ice.

Pumpkin Spice Latte (Halloween Version)

Prep time 10 minutes
Cooking time 20 minutes
Total time 30 minutes
Servings4 portions

Ingredients

  • 100 grams pumpkin puree
  • 250 ml heavy whipping cream
  • 4 tbsp granulated sugar divided
  • 750 ml whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 200 ml strong brewed coffee
  • 1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice
  • Mini marshmallows optional

Equipment

  • 4 glasses

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If making your own pumpkin puree, spread the diced pumpkin on a baking sheet and roast for 20-30 minutes, or until tender. Use an immersion blender or food processor to blend until smooth. If using prepared pumpkin puree, skip this step.
  2. In a medium bowl, whip the heavy cream with 2 tablespoons of the sugar until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  3. Combine the milk and pumpkin puree in a small saucepan. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla extract. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until hot but not boiling. For a frothier latte, whisk the mixture vigorously or use a milk frother.
  4. Divide the warm pumpkin milk mixture evenly among four glasses or mugs. Pour the strong brewed coffee into each glass and gently stir to combine.
  5. Top each latte with a generous dollop of whipped cream. Add a few mini marshmallows if desired, and finish with an extra sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Pumpkin puree: Use homemade or canned pure pumpkin puree. Avoid pumpkin pie filling, which already contains sugar and spices.
  • Coffee: Strong brewed coffee works well, but you can substitute espresso for a more intense coffee flavor.
  • Make it dairy-free: Substitute your favorite plant-based milk and use dairy-free whipping cream.
