You’ll already find plenty of delicious French toast recipes here on the site, but a basic French toast recipe was still missing. And since I recently had a cooking session planned, it felt like the perfect moment to make a classic batch of French toast again!

Tip from Simone
Use bread that’s preferably a day old and give it a little time to absorb the egg mixture. That way you’ll get French toast that’s soft on the inside and beautifully golden brown on the outside.
Recipe Ingredients
To make delicious French toast you really don’t need that many ingredients. Often it’s the toppings that make it even more special!
- Bread – I prefer using sturdy bread for French toast, such as sourdough. Of course you can use any bread you like. Just make sure the bread is preferably a bit stale.
- Cream or milk – To whisk with the eggs you can use heavy cream, light cooking cream, or whole milk.
- Cinnamon – Optional, but I always like adding it.
- Butter – The best French toast is cooked in butter. You can also use oil, but I find the flavor better with butter.
It’s also delicious to serve your French toast with fresh fruit. I used raspberries and strawberries here with a sprig of basil, but any fruit works well!
How To Make French Toast
For this basic French toast recipe, use a large skillet. Also prepare a shallow dish where the bread can lay flat (not too small!).
Whisk the eggs with the milk and cinnamon and pour the mixture into the dish. Dip each slice of bread in the milk mixture for a few seconds. Turn it over if necessary so both sides are coated.
Before dipping the bread, make sure your skillet is already heated with butter or oil. Place the soaked bread directly into the pan. Cook until golden brown on one side, then flip and cook the other side.
Transfer to a plate, dust with powdered sugar and fresh fruit, and serve warm. A small pat of butter on top is always delicious, but not required.
FAQ French Toast Recipe
Sturdy bread works best, such as sourdough or hearty whole wheat bread. But white sandwich bread or brioche also works well. Just make sure it’s not too fresh. Bread that’s one or even two days old absorbs the egg mixture better without falling apart.
Yes, but fresh bread tends to get soggy faster. Dip it very briefly in the egg mixture and cook it immediately in a hot pan.
Whole milk, heavy cream, or cooking cream will give you the richest result. You can also use 2% milk, but the flavor will be slightly less rich.
Yes, cinnamon is completely optional. You can leave it out or replace it with vanilla, cardamom, or a pinch of nutmeg.
Your pan is probably not hot enough or you’re using too little fat. Make sure the pan is properly heated and use enough butter (or a combination of butter and oil).
French toast is best served fresh, but you can cook it slightly ahead of time and keep it warm in a low oven (about 175°F / 80°C).
French Toast Variation Tips
- Kid-friendly: cut the bread into strips or cubes and cook them as mini French toast bites.
- Extra indulgent: use brioche, raisin bread, or Dutch sugar bread instead of regular bread.
- Lemon or orange: add some citrus zest to the egg mixture for a fresh flavor.
- Vegan French toast: replace milk with plant-based milk and use a mixture of mashed banana or cornstarch instead of eggs. Or use this recipe for vegan French toast instead
- Savory: leave out the cinnamon and vanilla and serve with sautéed mushrooms, cheese, or bacon. A bit like this savory bread pudding.
- Apple cinnamon: serve the French toast with sautéed apples, raisins, and extra cinnamon.
- Festive: top with mascarpone, yogurt, or quark and drizzle with honey or maple syrup.
