Tip from Simone

Tip from Simone

Because of the nuts and coconut milk, this spirulina smoothie bowl does contain quite a few calories. Want to lighten it up a bit? Swap the coconut milk for a light version or almond milk. You can also skip the nuts and use a little more fresh fruit instead.

Recipe Ingredients

You don’t need much to make this blue spirulina smoothie bowl, and the toppings are easy to switch up. I sometimes also make a spirulina smoothie with pineapple and green spirulina.

  • spirulina – I used blue spirulina, but green spirulina works just fine too
  • banana – a banana adds natural sweetness. You can make the smoothie even more filling by adding half an avocado. The banana can also be replaced with a few dates
  • coconut milk – I use full-fat coconut milk, but light coconut milk or another plant-based milk works as well
  • toppings – I chose blueberries, shredded coconut, and chopped nuts

What is spirulina?

Spirulina is a natural algae that has been eaten for centuries because of its nutritional value. You probably know it best as a green powder (or in capsules), packed with protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Blue spirulina is a bit different: it’s an extract of spirulina that only uses the blue pigment phycocyanin. That’s why it has such a bright blue color and a much milder flavor than regular (green) spirulina. Want to know more about the benefits of spirulina?

How To Make Blue Spirulina Smoothie Bowl

To make the smoothie bowl, add all the smoothie ingredients to a blender. Since there aren’t many hard ingredients, you can also use an immersion blender, it works just as well here. And that’s all there is to it.
