Homemade Cocktail Sauce Recipe

The perfect cocktail sauce recipe for so many things! Dip, dressing, sauce or add shrimps for a shrimp cocktail

Making your own cocktail sauce is super easy with this recipe. You only need a few ingredients. It is perfect for a barbecue party, as a base for your shrimp cocktail or as a dip with chips. It also combines really well with my favorite barbecue sauce recipe.

Homemade cocktail sauce

Cocktail sauce is typically one of those multi-functional sauces. It can be used at the barbecue, at the gourmet table or as part of a dish such as prawn cocktail. Personally, I prefer to make it with curry, but that gives it a specific flavor. If you are not a fan of curry, use ketchup instead.

Super easy

This cocktail sauce recipe is super easy to make. Just mix the ingredients and you’re done. It really doesn’t get any quicker or easier than that. It will keep in the fridge for a few days stored in an airtight container.

What do you need?

As I said the base of my cocktail sauce recipe is super easy and with simple ingredients but there are endless variations you can make. It uses only a handful of ingredients and most will be pantry ingredients. A typical ingredient to add is a bit of worcestershire sauce. I didn’t have that on hand and since it seemed a bit silly to buy a whole bottle just to add a few drops, I didn’t. But if you do have it in the cupboard adding some is a good idea. Other than that you need the following:

  • Mayonnaise
  • creme fraiche
  • Curry ketchup or ketchup – or add some chili sauce
  • Sriracha – you can replace this with any hot sauce
  • fresh lemon juice
  • tomato paste

I love adding some creme fraiche to the cocktail sauce as that makes it a little fresher and creamier. You can also replace this with a little bit of Greek yogurt if you want. Taste the end result and if needed you can add some lemon zest or black pepper and salt.

For an extra spicy kick I also love adding a little bit of fresh horseradish. How much horseradish is a personal preference. Horseradish root can be quite strong and overpowering so add a little bit at a time to make sure you don’t add too much..

For making the sauce you simply take a medium bowl and add all the ingredients together. Use a small whisk or a spoon and mix it till it gets a lovely pinkish color. Taste if it needs anything extra and you’re pretty much done.

What can you use the cocktail sauce for?

The better question would probably be; what can you not use this easy cocktail sauce recipe for. I love using it as a dipping sauce but a bag of chips for instance. But it is also my go to shrimp cocktail sauce. It can serve as a sauce on your hamburger, with crab cakes or as a simple seafood sauce. So much better than the bottled stuff!

Try it next time with these delicious onion rings or have it as a barbecue sauce.

I also use it as a base for a dressing if I want something a little different. To sum it up, it is a great condiment for many different things. The best cocktail sauce out there if you ask me. I don’t like raw oysters (or any other oysters really) but you can also pair this with the cocktail sauce.

Tips and tricks for making cocktail sauce

Can I make the cocktail sauce vegan?

You can make a vegan cocktail sauce by replacing the mayonnaise with a vegan mayonnaise. Replace the creme fraiche with soy yogurt or almond yogurt. Or leave it out all together.

How long can I store the cocktail sauce?

You can keep the sauce in the fridge for 4-5 days.
