Start by making the maple butter. Melt the butter in a small pan, bring to the boil and leave to simmer for about 5 minutes or until the butter starts to caramelise.
As soon as the butter is brown add the maple syrup to it. Leave to simmer for a bit until thickened slightly. Transfer to a cool bowl and leave to set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes while you prepare the rest. Take out once set and whisk till it is creamy. Set aside
Make the batter for the waffles by also browning the butter. Set this aside while you mix the flour, baking powder, icing sugar and the egg. Add the buttermilk and stir until smooth. Add the butter last and whisk until smooth.
Bake the waffles in your waffle iron. Depending on what kind you have it will take shorter or longer so follow the instruction of your waffle machine.
Serve the waffles with the maple butter and add some syrup and icing sugar if you want.
